How Do Publishers Generate Revenues From Ad Networks Such As Criteo, Taboola, Outbrain, and TrafficJunky

In this article, we have provided findings on how publishers–as opposed to direct advertisers–generates revenues from partnering with some of ad networks such as Criteo, Taboola, Outbrain, and TrafficJunky. Read below.

How Do Publishers Generate Revenues From Ad Networks Such As Criteo, Taboola, Outbrain, and TrafficJunky

We used Fotocasa.es as an example for revenue comparison. Each ad network has their own unique business model.

Outbrain

Here’s how Outbrain pay their publishers, for example, in this case is Fotocasa.es.

According to a Financial Times interview with Outbrain’s managing director in Europe, Outbrain shares 50% or half of any revenue generated with their partner sites. The cost per click paid is said to range from $0.15 to $0.30, or let’s say a median average of $0.225, while click rates are between 0.50% to 0.75%, or a median average of 0.625%.

Using the above averages, we can come up with some revenue estimates:

$0.225 CPC x 0.625% CTR x 50% revenue share

= $0.000703 per pageview to publishers or partner sites

Or about $0.703 per thousand pageviews to publishers or partner sites

Or about $703 per million pageviews to publishers or partner sites

So, for example, Fotocasa.es receives 1,078,560 pageviews per day, then it’s estimated revenue from Outbrain would be:

$0.225 CPC x 0.625% CTR x 50% revenue share * 1,078,560 pageviews

= $758.36 per day

According to the report, in order to partner with Outbrain, your site needs to have over 10 million monthly page views.

Taboola

Taboola do not disclose how much revenue shares they give to their partner sites or publishers.

However, from other experts analysis, considering their revenues, their daily recommendations, and their unique visits for advertisers, the estimated publishers CPC is at $0.35 which said to have higher than Outbrain’s. It’s CTR was estimated to be about 0.05% per recommendation, which translates into 0.20% to 0.30% per page, or a median average of 0.25%.

Using Fotocase.es figures to calculate estimated revenue would be:

$0.35 CPC in revenue x 0.25% CTR * 1,078,560 pageviews

= $943.74 per day

Criteo

Criteo, on the other hand, does not pay their publisher or partner sites based on CPC and CTR, but on CPM (cost per thousand impressions). According to their website,

“Criteo pays publisher partners on a CPM basis: for every thousand impressions delivered on the partner’s website. (Revenue/Impressions) x 1000.”

Criteo helps advertisers to generate more sales through personalized performance advertising at a global scale. Criteo offers two options to their publishers. This is how it works for publishers;

You set your minimum guaranteed CPM: this is the CPM which you are prepared to sell your inventory to Criteo

For every impression you send to Criteo, we are committed to:

  1. either purchase this impression at your floor price: this is the minimum CPM you’ll be paid
  1. Or, pass this impression on, in a manner which is transparent, to your usual advertising sales agency. In this case, Criteo does not take any commission: you get 100% of the revenue which comes from your usual advertising sales agency.

Due to Criteo’s unique offering to their partners, it was revealed that publisher revenue for Criteo’s ad buys are 20-40% higher on average as compared to other ad networks.

We take a look into how one of Criteo’s publisher or partner has explained the company’s business model or how they pay their publishers.

Criteo continuously monitors the quality of the traffic of the publisher. For each impression, they dynamically calculate the price based on the user’s history. They individually value each user based on their shopping history – more engaged shoppers are worth a higher CPM. For every impression, the network purchases the impression at or above the minimum CPM that has been set by the publisher. It transparently passes this impression back to the advertising partner. This is the process of dynamic allocation of CPM. On an average, CPM for different publishers varies from USD 2.8 to 5. CPC for highly motivated traffic is in the range of USD 1.5 to 1.6. If the CTR is higher than 1%, Criteo is able to achieve more than 300% of ROI.

Criteo pays CPMs which are almost 2-3 times that of AdSense. However, the fill rate is low as it is in the range of 10-40%. The CPM can be anywhere between USD 1 to 5 for every 1000 ad impressions. The network is very suitable for blogs or websites which are focused on shopping, travel, and lifestyle. It is very useful to monetize the traffic which is generated from North America and Europe. Additional retargeting solutions are operated on a cost per thousand (CPM) or cost per engagement (CPE) basis.

We again compare Fotocasa.es revenue from Criteo, and since we do not know the impressions’ value for Fotocasa, we take into consideration the 20-40% (or a median average of 30%) higher revenue to roughly determine how much Fotocasa earn from Criteo. In here, I will use the calculated revenue from Taboola.

Fotocasa’s revenue from Criteo

= $943.74 per day * 1.30

= $1,226.86 per day

TrafficJunky

Same as Criteo, TrafficJunky also pay their partners based on CPM. TrafficJunky is a purely CPM-based digital advertising network which provides high quality digital marketing and monetization solutions to both advertisers and publishers. Accordingly, the reason behind the popularity and success of this ad network is, it works with top publishers websites and it serves over 2.2 billion ad impressions to over 141 million visitors on a daily basis.

The company pays their publishers on a 60/40 basis–60% of the revenue for Publisher and 40% share for TrafficJunky.

CPM cost reportedly depends on the impressions and which device and location were analyzed. There was no provided data on how much is the range for TrafficJunky, but we take this example from an actual user.

“For a 289 million impressions, the daily average CPM bid was $0.112.” This means that for that impression range the cost per 1000 impressions was $0.112.

While we do not have Fotocasa.es impression figures, we cannot provide the estimated revenue from TrafficJunky, however, we can conclude that it is lower than the three above ad networks based on the graph provided by Similar Pro.

Factors Driving AI and Robotics Adoption in Food Service

Rising wages and a need to keep prices low have given several fast food companies a strong incentive to develop technologies to increase efficiency and reduce labor costs. Wages for fast food companies seem to be being pushed up by two primary causes:

  1. The end of the great recession is resulting in a tightening of the labor force pushing up wages.
  2. New state and local minimum wage legislation that particularly impacts fast food companies.

At the beginning of the year the minimum wage increased in 19 states. For example, a recently approved initiative in Washington State will raise the minimum wage to $13.50 an hour by 2020 and last year California adopted a law that will bring the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2022. Former McDonald’s USA CEO Ed Rensi told Fox Business that, “It’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries.”

As in any industry, fast food also has a tendency to follow the leader. The stock performance of Dominos over the last 7 years has gone from about $13 to well over $200, and it’s hard for competition to ignore. Companies that weren’t technology companies suddenly are, and nobody wants to be left in the dust. The giants of the industry (like the giants in the stodgy automotive industry) are all aware that technology will be a critical edge in the years ahead, and R&D budgets in automation and new customer interfaces reflect this change in attitude.

FINDINGS

THE E-COMMERCE SOFTWARE MARKET SIZE

Overall, the e-commerce software (all software not just accounting) market size globally was valued at $3.8 billion in 2017.

While if we consider the whole accounting software targeting all industry–not just retail and e-commerce– the total current market size would be $17.35 billion which will poised an annual growth rate of 8.92%. According to this report, the retail and e-commerce sector play a substantial role in the accounting software industry.

ACCOUNTING/INVENTORY SOFTWARE TARGETING E-COMMERCE SELLERS MARKET SIZE

There was no available report that could directly quote the market size of the specific target audience, thus, we calculated this value using a bottom-up analysis method and using reliable statistics and data.

In the small business world (including e-commerce retailers) , Quickbooks is reported to be the most used accounting software and it has more than 80% (or about 85%) market share in this industry.

Currently, Quickbooks has over 3.4 million subscribers according to their annual report. If these 3.4 million users are assumed to be in the e-commerce industry, then we estimated that about 4 million online sellers are currently using accounting software.

Estimated number of e-commerce sellers using accounting software

= 3.4 million / 85%

= 4 million

In terms of value, we consider Quickbooks average annual premier plus cost at $499.95;

Estimated e-commerce accounting software for sellers market size

= 4 million * $499.95

= $1.99 billion

TOTAL ADDRESSABLE MARKET OF ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE FOR E-COMMERCE SELLERS

TARGET AUDIENCE

To estimate the number of e-sellers/e-retailers, all those sellers selling online normally through e-commerce marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, we considered various data.

According to a report, 40% of all e-commerce marketplace are from the top 5 e-commerce companies. The top 5 e-commerce platform companies in the world are Taobao, Amazon, Walmart, eBay,  and Target.

First, we look at the available statistics of these 5 companies.

[Calculations]

Total e-commerce sellers from the above top 5 companies

= 18,700,460

Since the top 5 companies has a market share of 40% in terms of number of retailers/sellers, we divide the figure by 40% to get the total e-commerce seller market size globally.

Estimated number of e-commerce sellers globally

= 18,700,460 / 40%

=  46.75 million

If based on small business owners (which include retailers, either they have an employee or self-employed), according to a survey, 64.4% of these use accounting software. Assuming this trend is similarly the same with e-retailers, then we estimated that about 30.11 million e-commerce sellers are already using some kind of accounting and inventory software.

If assuming a 100% penetration, then this industry will be valued about $23.37 billion.

TAM Value based on revenue

= 46.75 million * $499.95

= $23.37 billion

Estimated number of sellers that use multi-channel

According to a report, about 80% of all Amazon sellers also use other platforms to sell their products, either on eBay, Jet, own website, Walmart, Newegg, Sears, among others. If we assume that in all platforms, 80% of their sellers use other website and just 20% are selling in one platform, then our rough estimate is that of the total 46.75 e-commerce sellers registered on all platforms, about 12.47 million are sellers that use at least 3 platforms.

Our estimate is based on the below assumptions;

We took 20% of all total sellers from the biggest marketplaces and assume this number to be those sellers which only sell on that platform;

46.75 million * 20% = 9.35 million

46.75 million * 80% = 37.40 million

Of this total 80% registered sellers, it could be possible that most of them sell on average 3 platforms, using this assumption to calculate the total per headcount;

Estimated number of sellers who sell on 3 platforms

= 37.40 million / 3 = 12.47 million

Online platform number of registered sellers

  • Amazon = 5 million
  • Taobao = 7 million
  • eBay = 6.7 million
  • Jet.com = 2,400
  • Sears = 14,000
  • Walmart and Target = 460
  • Rakuten = 44,000
  • All others (own website and other bigger marketplaces which reportedly about 50 globally) = 27.99 million

In conclusion, about 12.47 million are sellers that use at least 3 platform and about 9.35 million use just one platform–either their own website or using e-commerce marketplace.

  1. Buy cold calling services to book appointments with small-business prospects, whom he’d meet.
  2. Work out a deal with the owner to build a website and get paid upfront.
  3. Outsource the web design work to Fiverr sellers for as little as $30.
  4. Meet with the client again to ensure they’re happy with the work.
  5. Transition to negotiating a monthly contract with the owner for website marketing campaigns.

This earned Kevin $3600 in his first month, and the labor he had to expend was only minimal.

I Quit My Job As A Full Time Engineer, Now I’m A Freelancer. Here’s Why.

Quitting my job after graduating from the university was the last thing on my mind. Who in their right mind would think the same, right? After all the sleepless nights of doing projects, research papers, preparing for exams and then graduating, we finally get a paid job and are excited to be in the corporate world. This is it! This is what we dreamed of! And now we’re here. But why would I quit my job and commence freelancing?

From a full time job to freelancing

A Little Of My Background

I finished my Civil Engineering Degree in one of the universities in the Philippines. Before quitting my job, I worked as a Design Engineer for about 5 years. I was happy doing a traditional 8 to 5 job with lots of overtime.

Upon searching for more opportunities, I decided to work overseas and applied for an engineering position with an oil and gas company in Malaysia, where I worked for another 8 years. It was better than previous jobs, but truthfully, I never really enjoyed any of it. It was during this time that I start questioning and looking for a deeper fulfillment in life.

If you are someone who has searched “quit my job” or “freelancing” in hopes of finding encouraging stories of people who quit their job to follow their passion, then this article story is for you.

Struggles: To Quit Or Not To Quit

I have everything. The company provided me with a nice house, a fully maintained car, a mobile phone, allowances and very good pay with benefits. In return, I had to work full-time, including working 24-hours if need be.

I never started out unhappy at any job that I tried. I was well paid, the work was interesting, and I liked working with engineers. They are generally laid back and smart people.

But over time the discontentment grew. I thought the problem was with the particular job, or the company. Something just wasn’t sitting right with me. I loved my job and the benefits I was receiving but I was married to it 24/7. Eventually I decided to take a break from my engineering work and the decision to do so completely opened my eyes. I had been constantly working 50 to 60 hours a week. My life revolved around my work and the feeling was suffocating.

I wanted more than just working and coming home exhausted only to repeat the same routine the next day. I was not experiencing the quality of life that I once had, so I decided to tend my resignation letter and booked my plane ticket home.

Against All Odds?

“Oh it’s a millennial thing”, they said! “Why quit your job when many people are dreaming of what you are getting,” they said. “It is hard to get good jobs nowadays.” “Think twice.” These were the words I constantly hear after I quit my job.

Thankfully my family was supportive and they haven’t say anything negative about my decision.

Becoming A Freelance Research Analyst

I am a researcher. It’s in my nature. I am an introvert and I love to read, write, and discover new things.

I began to search the internet looking for jobs I could do online. To become a freelancer, you need to sign up to various platforms, take exams and wait for the results.

I was accepted as a Trial Research Analyst, on one of the secondary research firms, based in the United States. What I love about this job is it’s a freelance job. You can work at your designated time and you have the choice to cancel jobs anytime. As a beginner, a lot of my work got rejected from my reviewers and my ratings kept going down. Chances are, if I get low ratings, I would not be prioritized to get jobs.

To begin with, this was very discouraging but I continue to persevere learning more and more as I progress. The passion for my job is continuing to grow and I am loving the free time it is giving me. The pay? To begin with, my earnings drastically reduced compared to my salary as a full-time Engineer, not even half of it. But who cares? I still earned enough to pay my bills.

Still, I scrolled for hours on job boards, trying to find another full-time role that felt like the right move for me. I applied to a few, but as I interviewed, I knew nothing was the right fit. Unfortunately, I rarely listen to my intuition.

After two years with the same research firm, I then decided to sign up to one of the top freelancing platforms in the world–Fiverr! I set up my account, put up a professional profile and made it very simple with straight-forward information describing what I can offer. I immediately started getting orders from clients all over the world, receiving positive reviews.

Market research freelancer at Fiverr

What I like about Fiverr is that I can be a seller (selling my services) and at the same time I can be a buyer (customer). For example, I could buy a logo design services at just $5 or hire someone to fix my website SEO at $10!

What Now?

I’ve been doing it for a year now and I am getting jobs everyday that sometimes I have to cancel or decline some as I limit my workloads. On a side note, I created a website (yes, I am the owner of this website) and published some of my work here which is free to download or read while others can be purchased for as low as $5 for a complete market research report. The money collected are used to help vulnerable children.

Helping out vulnerable children

With millions of children suffering from hunger, sexual abuse, sex trafficking, child abuse, and child labor, we created this service to help these children. And yes, that is one thing I am passionate about, doing mission works.

Can I do that if I am in a full-time job? No.

Aside from that, I am also passionate about plants and I could take care of them in my free time. I can do my freelance job even if I am at the beach–one of my favorite place on earth!

The benefits of freelancing

Few Words For Those Reading This

Do what you love. Do what you are passionate about. We only live once in this world and why not live it in such ways that satisfies your soul. You maybe have a different story from mine but what is important is that we know the purpose of our life and we are doing it to bless others and gives fulfillment to us.

Thank you for reading my story. My name is Annabelle.

FINDINGS

GLOBAL PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES MARKET SIZE

According to Market Research, the global photographic services (covering both portrait studios and commercial studios) was valued at $36.15 billion in 2018 and will record an annual growth rate of 5% until 2023. The United States accounts for the largest market recording a 42.6% market share (about $15.4 billion), followed by Asia Pacific with 26.1% share and Europe at 20.9%.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES

The portraiture photography services pulled in a total revenue of $4.45 billion in 2018 in the United States alone. Back in 2016, the annual revenue of this sector was $4.25 billion and expected to reach $4.57 billion revenue by 2020. By calculation, the industry is growing by 1.83% annually.

Portrait photography services average cost

The current average cost of portrait photography services is between $170 to $230 (or a median average of $200) per session, depending on the photographer’s reputation, geographic location, the number of edited final digital photos, the number of prints, the subject of the portrait, the number of people in the portrait, the location(s) of the portraits, and the size of the photography business. The analyzed portrait photography includes subject of portraits, individual portrait, family portraits, newborn portraits, senior portraits, boudoir photography, among others.

Back in 2016, the average cost was between $125 to $300 or a median average of $212.50. In 2018, the average cost was between $200 to $210 per session (or a median average of $205).

If we analyze the trend above, the average rate per year is decreasing by about 2%. Thus, using this percentage to summarize yearly average;

[Calculations: average cost of portrait services per session]

  • 2016 = $212.50
  • 2017 = $212.5/1.02 = $207.50
  • 2018 = $205
  • 2019 = $200
  • 2020 = $200/1.02 = $196.08
  • 2021 = $196.08/1.02 = $192.23
  • 2022 = $192.23/1.02 = $188.46
  • 2023 = $188.46/1.02 = $184.77
  • 2024 = $184.77/1.02 = $181.15

Average income of a photographer in the United States

Next, we will determine the average income of a photographer in the United States from the US Census Bureau database.

From the above figure, we calculated that the average income was declining at about 4.81%. Using this percentage to calculate yearly averages;

[Calculations: average income of a photographer]

  • 2016 = $42,640
  • 2017 = $41,940
  • 2018 = $38,640
  • 2019 = $38,640/1.0481 = $36,866.71
  • 2020 = $36,866.71/1.0481 = $35,174.80
  • 2021 = $35,174.80/1.0481 = $33,560.54
  • 2022 = $33,560.54/1.0481 = $32,020.36
  • 2023 = $32,020.36/1.0481 = $30,550.87
  • 2024 = $30,550.87/1.0481 = $29,148.81

Number of people using portrait services

To determine the number of sessions (assuming one session represent one person using the service), we divide the average annual income by the average cost of portrait services per year.

[Calculations: number of people using portrait services per photographer annually]

  • 2016 = $42,640 / $212.50 = 201
  • 2017 = $41,940 / $207.50 = 203
  • 2018 = $38,640 / $205 = 189
  • 2019 = $36,866.71 / $200 = 185
  • 2020 = $35,174.80 / $196.08 = 180
  • 2021 = $33,560.54 / $192.23 = 175
  • 2022 = $32,020.36 / $188.46 = 170
  • 2023 = $30,550.87 / $184.77 = 166
  • 2024 = $29,148.81 / $181.15 = 161

Total number of portrait photographers in the United States

[Calculations: total number of portrait photographers in the United States]

  • 2016 = $4.25 billion / $42,640 = 99,672
  • 2017 = $4.37 billion / $41,940 = 104,197
  • 2018 = $4.45 billion / $38,640 = 115,166
  • 2019 = $4.52 billion / $36,866.71 = 122,604
  • 2020 = $4.57 billion / $35,174.80 = 129,923
  • 2021 = $4.65 billion / $33,560.54 = 138,556
  • 2022 = $4.74 billion / $32,020.36 = 148,031
  • 2023 = $4.83 billion / $30,550.87 = 158,097
  • 2024 = $4.91 billion / $29,148.81 = 168,446

Total number of people using portrait services in the United States

[Calculations: total number of people using portrait services in the United States]

  • 2016 = 99,672 * 201 = 20.03 million
  • 2017 = 104,197 * 203 = 21.15 million
  • 2018 = 115,166 * 189 = 21.77 million
  • 2019 = 122,604 * 185 = 22.68 million
  • 2020 = 129,923 * 180 = 23.39 million
  • 2021 = 138,556 * 175 = 24.25 million
  • 2022 = 148,031 * 170 = 25.17 million
  • 2023 = 158,097 * 166 = 26.24 million
  • 2024 = 168,446 * 161 = 27.12 million

PHOTOGRAPHER’S EQUIPMENT SPENDING

According to a research, the United States will be spending a total of $3.1 billion of photography equipment for the purpose of these services. Assuming that 29% of these spending accounts for portrait services, then about $899 million will be spent by portrait photographers. If the US have 115,166 portrait photographers in 2018, then the average spending per photographer is $7,806.
